Children may be referred for a psychoeducational assessment for several reasons including difficulties in school, suspected learning difficulties, or behavioral problems. The cause of a school or behavior problem is often not immediately clear, and a detailed psychoeducational assessment can highlight the strengths and challenges that a child has.
What is Psychoeducational Assessment?
Psychoeducational assessment is a detailed assessment of a child's psychological and academic skills. It involves conducting specialised tests and task that assess:
- Intelligence
- Language skills
- Memory
- Learning
- Attention/ concentration
- Planning/Executive Functioning
- Reading (phonetic skills,reading comprehension)
- Spelling/Writing
- Mathematics
- Academic fluency (speed of reading, writing, calculating)

The specific aspects of psychoeducational testing will depend on the presenting problem and additional tests are sometimes required.
Gifted Psychoeducational Assessments
In some cases, psychoeducational assessment is sought out specifically to determine if a child is gifted, meets criteria for admission to a school's gifted program or simply to determine their current academic strengths and weaknesses for the purposes of academic and career planning. Dr. Limbos can conduct such assessments and make recommendations for gifted programs or other academic goals, academic modifications and remediation. Testing for these purposes is often less complex than for undifferentiated problems and in some cases fees may be lower. Dr. Limbos will discuss charges for gifted assessment on a case by case basis.
The Process of Psychoeducational Assessment
Psychoeducational assessment typically takes place over 3-4 visits, beginning with an initial meeting to determine the presenting problem and set goals for the assessment. The actual psychoeducational assessment typically takes 6-8 hours of direct contact with the child and this can take place over 1 or 2 days. Finally, there is a feedback meeting to discuss the findings of the psychoeducational assessment.
